How can I find a pro bono attorney for my child?

My daughter is being bullied by a girl in school. Despite suspension, she has not stopped harrassing my daughter. She wants to file a restraining order against her. I have picked up the paperwork and know we can file and go through the process alone, but this girl’s parents have money and will probably hire an attorney. I am a single mom that is out of a job. Ask around, go to law firms, or call some lawyers and explain your situation, I’m sure they will either help by doing it, or help by giving you someone else to call.

The courthouse usually has people to help with the paperwork process, that’s all you really need.. Once you get in front of the judge plead your case and I hope you have some proof….

What state do you live in?
Check your state’s bar association website. There should be some links. You could try findlaw.com, but I don’t think that they have a pro bono referral section.
You should try talking to a lawyer anyway. If you explain your situation and what you are able to pay, you may find an affordable attorney.
Finally, try filing the restraining order on your own. If this girl has been suspended because of bullying, there is really little room to argue that a restraining order should not be issued.

In Pennsylvania, most county bar associations have a list of local attorneys who handle cases on a “pro bono” basis. In Dauphin County [Harrisburg], Pennsylvania, association members who are not governmental attorneys are required to perform pro bono service or pay an assessment to the association.

You’ll have a hard time with this. Retraining orders are not high on lawyers things to do pro bono because as you stated you don’t really need a lawyer to get one and so most lawyers will see it as a waste of their time. You might be able to get a lawyer to help you who has some time to kill and is already at the courthouse.
The good thing though is that restraining orders are almost always granted. The only issue I can see here is because the children go to the same school. With situations like where the restraining order might require that the other girl change schools the bar is going to be set a lot higher than normal for a restraining order. If the bullying is really that bad you might have better luck getting the school board to expel the girl or at least getting the school board worried enough about the liability issues of allowing the bullying to continue that they will act as your proxy and force the issue with the other girl’s parents.
