What is an average attorney fee for a federal appeal of a sentence?

A friend of a friend is locked up in federal prison and has been for the last 15 years for a carjacking. They went to see an attorney and he said it would cost $25,000.00 for the case. Is this right, too high? to low?

Sounds about right, maybe a little on the low side. Legal rates vary from place to place. Of course without knowing why relief is being sought after 15 years it’s hard to evaluate. If the motion for relief is based on new DNA evidence, $25K sounds just about right.

The last appeal I handled was before the Hague and it cost my client $150,000 in legal fees plus another $300,000 for expert testimony and incidentals.
You are getting off cheap.

I agree, that’s cheap.
I assure you it’s a starting point - the fees will mount and it will cost far more.
