What is the best way to withdraw an attorney from one case while keeping him on another?

Life goes on asked:

My family wishes to withdraw our attorney on a very important case, for which he has done very little if anything at all, with the intention of hiring an attorney more specified for the type of case that it is. On the other hand, we wish to keep him on an entirely different case that is already 2 years in the works. What is the best way to do this without offense so that he remains affective in the other case?

I suggest you dump him all together. If hes useless in one he may let you down in the other…
